3.3 - Blog: Recruitment and Marketing

Discuss what makes your organization (or one that you worked for) an incredible or not-so-incredible place to work?

The U.S. Navy presents an outstanding opportunity, aligning with a commitment to excellence, the development of leadership skills, and career preparation. The Navy promotes a Culture of Excellence that motivates individuals to reach their highest potential. When collaborating with reliable shipmates, a sense of community emerges that appeals to prospective candidates.

In preparation for its future leaders, the organization provides structured education, on-the-job training, and independent learning, all of which closely align with the Navy's Core Values. Upon enlisting and up to the E-4 rank, the Enlisted Leader Development Course is introduced providing basic naval practices alongside leadership and ethical decision-making for Sailors up to the E-4 rank. As the Sailor progresses to E-5, the Intermediate Leader Development Course concentrates on aligning personal intrinsic values with leadership challenges. At E-6, the Advanced Leader Development Course is designed to further develop responsibilities, and the Chief Petty Officer Leader Development Course at E-7 merges leadership principles with command climate initiatives.

How would you showcase your organization to candidates and employees?

To showcase the Navy to candidates and employees, I would highlight the culture of excellence and teamwork with the power of social media. Commanding officers and Sailors can post about daily life aboard ships, training exercises, and team traditions for a peek into Navy life. When declassified, successful missions, operational teamwork, and personal stories can be posted to reinforce the Navy's traditions.

If you were the CEO, reflect on what you would like your employer brand to look like?

The employer brand would appear innovative, agile, and authentic, genuinely reflecting the Navy's core values of trust, respect, and teamwork. As the CEO, it would be my responsibility to position the Navy as a forward-thinking organization, one that embraces a culture of continuous learning. The approach would align with offering transparent and equitable career development opportunities.
