2.3 - Blog: Social Media, Social Networking, and Hiring
For this blog entry, I have performed an online search of myself with Google.
Nothing comes up about me on the results page. Why? I have second cousins who share the same exact name. Unfortunately, this one is more famous than I, and therefore floods the internet with his criminal convictions; conspiracy, murder...
What should I do?
I've distinguished myself online by using my full name, middle initial, or middle name on all professional profiles. Additionally, I've inserted professional photos to my LinkedIn profile to clearly show my identity. Lastly, I've included location and professional details on my resumes to help distinguish myself.
No matter how strong or positive my digital presence is, my cousin's presence will always shadow the Google results. Perhaps, this'll change when I'm famous 😏. To make matters worse, I don't use social media because I'm conservative with my personal life and prefer to separate it from my professional life. However, until my online presence improves, I will run the risk of mistaken identity.
